Skin Discoloration

Stages of varicose vein and vein disease

Most people who have discoloration of the inner calf associate the darkening as part of the normal aging process or due to sun exposure. To anyone who doesn’t have these darkened areas it is obvious that it is nor normal. Why do people allow for the skin to change? Why isn’t it caught by our medical community at the early stages?  Sometimes patient have been given poor or incomplete medical advice. This is especially true as venous disease has changed in the past 15 years due to advancements. Medical professionals have not been properly trained to identify venous disease and subsequently inform the patient that it is a cosmetic skin changes.

The darkening of the skin usually is so gradual that it doesn’t even dawn on the individual that the changes are not normal. Discoloration in the medial aspect of the calf is often due to chronic venous insufficiency. Chronic – as it has been going on for some time.  Discoloration often occurs along the calf perforator vessels and are due to deep venous insufficiency caused by scarring from previous deep vein thrombus. The deep veins are not competent and thus the flow of the veins travels out to the surface instead of from the surface to the deep system.
